Fix-Up Friday- Part 2

Before Funky Junk took over the old, new location, you need to get an idea of what the place looked like to begin with....

Seriously pathetic patio.

Three ugly floors meet.

Bad yellow painted ceiling with fluorescents... always in style.

Vast bare white-walled warehouse... empty, empty.

Sad blue powder room.

So much potential, so much needed paint. Stay tuned for the slow but good changes to come...

Kitty Whalen- Store Manager

Meet Kitty Whalen, Funky Junk's Store Manager.

Kitty lives in Horseheads, NY, and has been a fan of Funky Junk since the store opened.  When the opportunity arose to work at the store, Kitty jumped at the chance.

Kitty says she likes working at Funky Junk because she is "nosy" at heart.  She enjoys seeing what customers are interested in, how they envision their homes with the Funky furniture in the store, and particularly seeing how an old piece of junk can be restored into something beautiful.

The most challenging thing about working at Funky Junk?  "There is only so much space!"  Kitty works hard every day to find deliberate and attractive ways to display the Funky Finds in the limited space of the store.

But Kitty is more than a Funky Junk retail guru.  She is also an illustrator and graphic designer.  Check out her Etsy page- Digital FairyTale to see where else her creativity is taking her on her free time.

Stop by the store anytime and share with Kitty your latest upcycling creation- she'd love to talk art, junk, or upcycling with you!

Fix-Up Friday- Part 1

Funky Junk is opening a second location!
Yes, you heard that correctly. Coming soon you can get your Funky Junk fix at FJ Commons, or FJ Island.
Funky Junk has acquired a staggeringly Funky and incredibly fabulous new place of business on Taughhannock Boulevard/Rt 89, in Ithaca's up-and-coming West End.
In real estate they always say location, location, location.  This new location is right in so many ways... it has a patio and porch directly on the Inlet, it is across the street from Island Health and Fitness, it is a hop, skip, and jump from Cass Park, and it is nearby a pizza joint, a natural foods co-op, a quik-stop grocery, a swanky seafood joint, at least two cafe's - and that's just within two blocks!
And while right now it is not much to write home about, white walls, weird lighting, and uneven floors,

in the weeks to come, the new location will be getting a complete overhaul and renovation. Kristina and David are very excited to get this project going!

From now until the Funky Junk Island Grand Opening, every Friday will be Fix-Up Friday.  As Kristina and David, and their Funky Staff wade through this ultimate upcycling project we'll keep you up to date on everything.  We'll show you the changes the building undergoes.  We'll check in with our new neighbors and give you the low-down on the Island Neighborhood.  And we'll share with you the ups and downs of this changing business landscape.

Funky Junk has loved the Commons store for the past nine months.  And it is true that this location will be closing sometime in 2013, due to the Commons renovations and building redevelopment.
For now however, Funky Junk Lovers stay tuned for more Funky Fresh ideas for your fabulous and Upcycled home!

There are more reasons than it is possible to count why buying local and handmade is fabulous... but here are a few to get you thinking...

1- Handmade items are made with care, thought, and love.  Gifts made by real hands are truly from the heart.
2-You guarantee that no one is giving the same gift as you!
3- Indie designers are often more fashion forward and on the cutting edge of creation.
4- Products made on the small scale are more environmentally friendly- no big factories, chemicals, or waste to deal with.
5- Buying from small-business artisans and craftspeople supports what we need more of in our world- Creativity!
